Valdez Logos

Last Frontier Theatre     Conference Logo Design

After seeing my sketches over the past year's conference (click here to see them), the head of the conference asked me if I'd be interested in designing a new logo for the event, as he was thinking of changing the name and updating the branding. I happily accepted, and we started bouncing ideas around. One of the first things I did was to make a couple of thumbnail sketches:

I was trying to incorporate ideas and images that embodied some aspect of the Conference... Playwrighting (a quill), Theatre (drama masks... trite, but worth including), Alaska (mountains), Valdez's wildlife (bears), Music Stands (that are used in every play reading during the conference), and finally the monogram of the new name. Then, I chose my favorites and started to clean them up to give my client a clearer idea of what I was going for. Here are a few of those early ideas:

We quickly narrowed down the selection to the following two:

The round badge is based on the iconic Worthington Glacier in Valdez, while the second is based on one of the mountain ranges also in the area. The mountains are such a huge part of the atmosphere of the conference, and the designs are a modern and fun update to the previous logo. I look forward to seeing how they use these in the near future! What do you think?
