K.Y. Craft: "Cinderella"

The dark and chilly weather has made me a bit down this past month or so, which makes it difficult to start new pieces. This Sunday, after several aborted attempts at several ideas, I decided it was time to go through a few of my new books. So I grabbed "Cinderella" off the shelf and started sketching.

The Cherry Tree Fairy

After finishing the Cinderella sketch, I wanted to do another one. But there were errands to run and chores to do, so I set my materials aside and got myself outside and moving around. Later in the evening I had the opportunity to revisit my drawing table, so I grabbed Cicely Mary Barker's Book of Flower Fairies, opened it to a random page in the middle, and chose to sketch from the Cherry Tree Fairy.

Arthur Rackham: "Mother Goose"

I had some fun one Sunday in January sketching from one of my Christmas gifts: an art book containing a collection of Arthur Rackham's illustrations. Often, before jumping into a painting or big project, I start off with a quick study of a piece by one of my favorite artists. That way, I get warmed up and I learn a little bit about how the masters did it.

Blonde Portrait

I was working on a self-portrait, but it didn't end up looking much like me. I liked the original quick sketch, though, so I decided to finish her anyway and make her into her own person. I've been having fun with some new brushes from Kyle T Webster and Trent Kaniuga on Gumroad, so I'm happy to finally be able to create more of a hand-drawn effect in Photoshop now.

Alphonse Mucha: "Standing Woman"

I've always been inspired by the drawings and paintings of Alphonse Mucha, so I got a book with a collection of his sketches a few months ago and have been studying them whenever I get the chance. I finally got to sit down today and sketch from it again, and I got three drawings done in the space of two and a half hours. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday morning/afternoon!

Orchids

I did a series of watercolor cards for Mother's Day last year, and I thought it'd be fun to get a time-lapse of the process. I'm not trained in Watercolor, but I like playing around with watercolor pencils, and I was fairly happy with how they turned out.

Purple Pirate

My friend Laura is currently working towards her PHD. She's been doing very well, but she's been overwhelmed with the huge work load it requires. So, for her birthday last year, I decided to try to cheer her up by drawing her as a pirate dressed in purple (her favorite color), slashing away at her workload. This was the first drawing I ever completed on my IPad with my new stylus. I'm not thrilled with my stylus, but this was the first time it helped to produce a product I was fairly happy with.
